Sustainability

Sustainability at Teknoware

At Teknoware, we have defined our core ethical values that form the backbone of our business conduct. By acting according to our ethical values, we can ensure that we fulfill our responsibilities with regard to our employees, products and services, customers, and the environment. As continuous improvement of our performance is at the heart of our operations, we have developed a Sustainability Management System to enable monitoring and systematic improvement of our sustainability performance.

CEO commitment

Since Teknoware was founded in 1972, the people in the company have wanted to operate on an ethically sound basis. The founder, Kalervo Virtanen, envisioned an international company that would be built on its customer focus, knowledge, technological competence and strong values.

A lot has happened over the years and unfortunately the world’s population, the resources we consume, and the waste we produce are constantly increasing, which is increasing pressure in many ways in our everyday work and personal lives.

In response to these challenges, we are operating with a Sustainability Management System (SMS) throughout our global operations. With the SMS, we are able to take focused, measurable and transparent actions towards environmental, social and economic sustainability.

As a family-owned business, we believe in everyday actions at work and at home. To be successful, we need everyone onboard: managers, employees, customers and suppliers. Let’s work together on this journey.

Sustainability Management System — Our Key Performance Indicators

Our Sustainability Management System is implemented across all of our operations worldwide. To monitor our impacts and the effectiveness of our improvement actions, we have set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for environmental, social and economic sustainability. Identification of our sustainability KPIs was guided by our materiality assessment. The general sustainability KPIs are monitored by Teknoware worldwide and some sites also have site-specific KPIs depending on the nature of operations.

Environmental sustainability

Reduction of waste generation and energy usage at Teknoware sites.

Social sustainability

Human rights, diversity in the workforce and employee well-being.

Economic sustainability

Improved circularity of our products, the use of recycled raw materials when technically feasible, and the recyclability of our products.

EcoVadis Bronze medal certificate

EcoVadis is the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings. The award of an EcoVadis medal is a recognition that a company has demonstrated a relatively strong management system that addresses a number of sustainability criteria. A company’s achievements are ranked in relation to the EcoVadis database which contains over 100,000 companies in more than 175 countries and across 200 industry sectors.

Teknoware achieved a Bronze Medal rating in the 2024 EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment, and was ranked in the top 35% of companies. The EcoVadis award sums up the impact of our sustainability efforts, helps us monitor our progress, and tells our customers that we are a responsible player performing well in international comparisons.

The process of taking part in the EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment enhances and supports our sustainability practices, commitments, and performance. It also provides a clear roadmap for continuous improvement going forward. The rating we achieved demonstrates and validates our commitment to sustainability and supports our company goals. In the coming years, Teknoware aims to systematically improve the company’s Ecovadis rating.
