Requirements and Standards
Emergency Lighting is Carefully Regulated
The required performance of emergency and emergency exit lights is specified in international standards. All our emergency and emergency exit lights and our central battery units meet the requirements of the applicable standards, and all the required documentation is available for them.
Always check the specific guidelines that refer to your own country. This page is based on common European regulations.
Emergency exit lights must be visible
The most important characteristic of emergency exit lights is visibility: the luminaires and their symbols must stand out from the surroundings both in normal lighting and when power is lost. All our emergency exit lights meet the requirements of the European standards EN 1838 and EN 60598-2-22, including their photometric requirements.
Illuminance determines the placement of emergency lights
The emergency lighting standard EN 60598-2-22 requires that the manufacturer of emergency lights specify the photometric performance of the luminaire. The purpose of emergency lights is to generate illuminance levels of minimum 1 lux for escape routes and minimum 0.5 lux for open areas, which are typical in Europe.
The photometric performance of the luminaire type must be known so that the emergency lights can be placed correctly in the property. The manufacturer of the luminaires must conduct measurements and simulations to verify the illuminance levels. We use professional testing equipment and test premises and can therefore guarantee the compliance of our luminaires
Requirements applicable to central battery units
Implementing emergency lighting by means of a central battery system means that the emergency and emergency exit lights share a centralised back-up power source. Lighting can be controlled, managed and maintained centrally. All our central battery units meet the requirements of EN 50171.
Maintenance and responsibilities
The functionality of emergency lighting must be ensured by means of regular testing and maintenance.
The emergency exit lights must usually always be illuminated so that they can be seen both in the dark and in daylight. When assessing the condition of the system, it should be noted that LED signs become dimmer over the years and so ultimately will no longer meet the required standards.
Light output can be assessed visually, but a specific device is required for the accurate measurement of the luminance for comparison against the standard values.
Any actions undertaken must be recorded in a log book that must be presented to the local authorities for review when requested.
